I'm experimenting this year, but so far I'm finding that old plastic sweater boxes -- you know, the ones that slide under the bed -- are about the right depth. I want to see if using these also helps cut down on the pests. I've been putting my lettuce under trees, and never noticed the problem you had in close proximity to the fence, but I appreciate your warning.
