I grow lettuce both in the garden and containers. I always "season the soil" with seed and I don't thin too early. If there is still time in the growing season, I cut the head at the soil level and leave the roots. Most of the time a new head will grow.

I have decided that since lettuce and most greens can grow in fairly shallow ground, that I prefer growing mine in containers elevated to an easy picking height. I'm experimenting this year, but so far I'm finding that old plastic sweater boxes -- you know, the ones that slide under the bed -- are about the right depth. I want to see if using these also helps cut down on the pests. I've been putting my lettuce under trees, and never noticed the problem you had in close proximity to the fence, but I appreciate your warning.

It's very important to plant the lettuce in the right time. Summer heat is not good, but any big frost is dangerous too.
