Cindy: Well, of course: mold is a fungus. Thanks for encouraging me to revisit 8th grade biology. Perhaps I misunderstood whatever that article about late blight was trying to convey about the organism. So, setting the record straight: Late Blight is mold which makes it a type of fungus. That probably explains why fungicides can be effective in fighting it.

But Daniel -- mold is a fungus!

Having fought toxic mold in our previous house (and lost), I have an irrational fear of it and any cousins. I'm sure I go overboard, but I've decided the stuff is demonic.

Great post. Lots of good info.

My potatoes got late blight (as did my tomatoes), but the tubers were fine. For prevention of blight next year, I also read that we should all buy seed potatoes - don't start potatoes from store-bought. I don't know what assurance that give one, but worth researching.

One interesting thing I found was that my heirloom tomatoes got blight much more quickly than my non-heirlooms, though they all eventually succumbed.
